Staying Committed to Your Debt Diet

If it is hard to stay on a diet to shed those unwanted pounds, it can be even more of a challenge to stay on a debt diet – working to reduce all of your bad debt. But like any other diet, there are things that you can do to set yourself up for success:

  • Surround yourself with supportive people – if all of your friends are still spending money it may make sense to limit the time that you spend with them, or convince them to try other things like an afternoon of thrift store shopping to put the perfect outfit together for $20 or have a potluck dinner instead of meeting at a restaurant

  • Check out the local library – most libraries maintain a fairly current selection of the newest books available and movies just out on DVD, not to mention free internet access– since your local taxes fund this resource, take advantage of it

  • Find a new hobby – most cities offer very inexpensive classes (from tennis to cooking to yoga) through their parks and recreation department

  • Treat yourself – set a series of debt reduction milestones, and when you reach one celebrate with a predetermined treat – like dinner out and a movie, or a new item of clothing (just make sure that you set a budget for it up front and pay for it with cash!)
